XII Winter International Olympic Games

4 – 15 February 1976

Athletes of Andorra and San Marino competed at the Games for the first time.
The Soviet team that included 79 athletes won 13 gold, 6 silver and 8 bronze medals, and dominated the total medal count.
Athletes had played for 37 sets of medals in 6 sports.
The XII Olympic Winter Games were officially opened by President of Austria Rudolf Kirchschläger.

WINNER MEDALS
OBVERSE: actually a replica of the 1964 Olympic medal. And the designer was the same, M.Coufal. The right sector depicts a lit Olympic torch superimposed on the mountain range and stylized segment of the sport arena, ski-run. The left upper sector has the engraved name of the sport concerned in German, grass hockey in this particular case. The designer’s name in German “Coufal” is engraved at the right edge.
REVERSE: also almost a replica of the 1964 winner medal reverse design, but for the legend of the XII Olympic Winter Games around the rim and the name of the host city and year of celebration “Innsbruck-76” below the official logo.

COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL
OBVERSE: a composition of the Winter Olympic Stadium with a stylized city view of Innsbruck above, and mountain range in the background.
The initial and name of the designer in German “W. Pichl” are engraved in the right lower sector.
REVERSE: the official logo of the Winter Olympics in the center with stylized frostwork on the surface. The name of the host city and year of celebration “Innsbruck-76” are engraved underneath. The inscription around the rim in German reads: “XII Olympische Winterspiele” (English: XII Olympic Winter Games).

Olympic Medals, 1964 and 1976

The Austrian Government established the respective Olympic medals of merit to be presented to organizers and active participants of the IX and XII Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria in 1964 and 1976. The medals are 30 mm in diameter, suspended from a red-and-white triangular ribbon (bowknot for female recipients), and made of pewter.
