XIV Winter International Olympic Games

8 – 19 February 1984

The XIV Olympic Winter Games were officially opened at the Kosevo Stadium on February 8, 1984.
1272 athletes (including 274 female ones) of 49 nations competed at these Games. 39 sets of medals had been played for in 10 sports.
Athletes of United States Virgin Islands, Egypt, Monaco, Puerto Rico and Senegal made their first appearance at these Games. To increase the number of participant-nations the IOC made a decision to defray the costs of one male and one female athletes of every national team.
Senegal skier Lamine Guèye became the first Black African alpine skier to compete at the Olympics. For the first time, the male and female athletes were accommodated in two separate Olympic Villages. For the first time, the Olympic Programme included the 20-km women’s Nordic skiing.
