Athletes of Norway dominated the medal count as they were the best in skating and skiing events (crosscountry and ski jumping). The Soviet team (74 athletes) won 5 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze medals, and was ranked second in the total medal count.
The X Olympic Winter Games were officially opened by President of France Charles de Gaulle.

WINNER MEDALS
The winner medal was suspended from a ribbon of the Olympic colors passed through a special hanger. The medal design was created by designer Roger Excoffon.
OBVERSE: a snowflake surrounded by three roses over the Olympic rings. This composition became an official logo of the Olympics. The host city name and year of celebration “Grenoble 1968” are engraved horizontally below the logo. Three snowflakes are depicted at the medal bottom rim.
A legend in French around the medal rim reads: “X Jeux Olympiques D’Hiver” (English: X Olympic Winter Games).
REVERSE: stylized hockey sticks depicted at different angles form a figure of a hockey player in his hockey wear. Underneath is the name of the sport concerned, ice hockey in this particular case. The design of the reverse side varies depending on the sport.

COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS
