XIII Winter International Olympic Games

13 – 24 February 1980

These Games welcomed 1072 athletes (including 232 women) of 37 nations. Totally 38 sets of medals had been played for in 10 sports. Athletes of Cyprus, China and Costa Rika made their first appearance at these Games.
For the first time the Olympic Programme included biathlon 10-km individual men’s races.

WINNER MEDALS
The designer of the Lake Placid Olympic winner medal has made his best to depict the nature of that region combing it with the Olympic symbols.
OBVERSE: a hand holding the Olympic torch against the background of the mountain range and lake. The right sector depicts the Olympic rings. The left sector reads the four-line inscription in English “XIII Olympic Winter Games”.
REVERSE: a pine branch with cones in the right sector, and the three-line inscription “Lake Placid 1980” in the left sector, with a miniature symbol of the 1980 Winter Olympics atop.

COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL
The medal has been designed by М. Jovine.
OBVERSE: a combination of pictograms depicting various Winter Olympic Programme disciplines, viz. ski jumping, bobsleigh, speed skating, figure skating, tobogganing, biathlon, ice hockey, Nordic skiing and downhill with no inscriptions at all.
REVERSE: the official logo of the Games in the center surrounded by the English text of the Olympic oath: “In the name of all the competitors I promise that we shall take part in these Olympic Games, respecting and abiding by the rules which govern them, committing ourselves to a sport without doping and without drugs, in the true spirit of sportsmanship, for the glory of sport and the honor of our teams” in four concentric circles.
