669 athletes (including 77 female ones) of 28 nations competed at the Games. Totally 22 sets of medals were played for in 4 sports.
Athletes of Denmark, Iceland, Lebanon, Chile and South Korea made their first appearance at these Winter Olympics.
The V Olympic Winter Games were officially opened by President of the Swiss Confederation Enrico Cello.

WINNER MEDALS
OBVERSE: in the center is the hand holding a lit torch superimposed on the Olympic rings. Snowflakes decorate the empty space right and left. A legend around the rim reads: “Citius, Aldus, Fortius”.
The mint name, Huguenin, is engraved in French on the left and on the right of the hand holding the lit torch.
REVERSE: the four-line inscription in French “V Jeux Olympiques D’Hiver St. Moritz 1948” (English: V Olympic Winter Games, St. Moritz, 1948) is engraved between two snowflakes.

COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL
OBVERSE: a female skater is running leftward, with the mountain range in the background.
REVERSE: the Olympic rings appear over the fiveline inscription in French “V Jeux Olympiques D’Hiver St. Moritz 1948” (English: V Olympic Winter Games, St. Moritz, 1948).
The mint name, Huguenin, is engraved in French on the obverse and reverse sides.
