WINNER MEDALS
The Sapporo Olympic winner medal is of a nonstandard appearance, it is a curved square bearing a roundel that contains the key information on the event.
The medal has a suspension link used to pass the Olympic-color ribbon, and the suspension bar that contains additional visual information.
The obverse was designed by Kazumi Yagi, and the reverse – by Ikko Tanaka.
OBVERSE: a stylized zigzag bobsleigh or ski track (you may take it as you like), and bird’s eye panorama of the Olympic stadium in the left sector.
The right-angled suspension bar depicts a pictogram of the sport concerned (a skier in this particular case).
REVERSE: as distinct from the obverse the reverse is plain without any roundel. The official logo of the Sapporo Winter Games is depicted in the center, with the one-line legend in Japanese “XI Olympic Winter Games, Sapporo” around the top rim, and the four-line inscription in English “XI Olympic Winter Games” underneath in the left sector, and the name of the host city and year of celebration “Sapporo-72” in the right sector.
The reverse side of the suspension bar has the English name of the discipline concerned, ski race.
COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL
All members of the Organizing Committee, athletes, judges and assistants were presented with a commemorative medal designed by S. Fukuda. Its design is neat.
OBVERSE: two stylized arrows on the plain surface.
REVERSE: the official logo of the Sapporo Winter Games, at that the design defers from that on the reverse of the winner medal. The logo is built vertically on the plain surface with nothing detracting your attention. There are two inscriptions in Japanese and English reading the name of the host city and year of celebration underneath “Sapporo-72”.
