I Winter International Olympic Games

25 January - 4 February 1924

These Winter Olympic Games were officially celebrated as the International Winter Sports Week in association with the Games of the VIII Olympiad (they were held in April of the same year). As we can see from the official name of this winter multi-sport event, originally it was not treated as the full-fledged Olympics. One year passed before the International Olympic Committee made a decision to celebrate winter Olympics regularly. Simultaneously the IOC decided to call these 1924 winter multi-sport competitions the First Olympic Winter Games.
258 athletes (including 11 female ones) of 16 nations competed at the Games. 16 sets of medals had been played for in 6 sports.
The I Olympic Winter Games were officially opened by French Undersecretary for Physical Education Gaston Vidal.
