The Olympic Winter Games were officially opened by Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi on February 10. The Olympic Oath was voiced on behalf of athletes by Giorgio Rocca , and on behalf of judges by Fabio Bianchetti.
The Olympic Flame was lit at the Opening Ceremony by Italian cross-country skier, Champion of the 1992 and 2002 Winter Olympics Stefania Belmondo.
2663 athletes (1627 men and 1006 women) of 80 nations competed at the Games. They had played for 84 sets of medals in 15 sports.
WINNER MEDALS
The winner medal is round in shape with an empty space in the center. The medal is wrapped up in its red silk ribbon.
The obverse of the medal depicts the official logo of the Games. The reverse of the medal features the pictogram of the sports discipline, in which the medal was won. The unique medals were officially shown at the official ceremony in Turin.
COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL
The medal is made of pewter.
OBVERSE: the official emblem of the Games, the silhouette of the Mole Antonelliana over the inscription “Tourino 2006” and Olympic rings.
REVERSE: stylized rays of the rising sun, Olympic rings and motto “Citius, Altius, Fortius”.
